I’m continually dumbfounded by the pandemic retrospect: 1 year ago, for the first day of fall, I had just gotten a brand new lil puppy boy, I had just left my full-time job at Southwest Airlines, and [now I see] I was in a bit of panic mode. Life changes abounded… whew.
Some people clean when they procrastinate or their head is spinning, but I tend to nest/decorate. Can’t imagine how this will intensify later in my life, given how extravagant it seems to already be at my young, single age. So when my world was spinning in September 2020, I oomphed up my fall decor. Made 0 sense, but true it was. In honor of our first day of fall 2021, and because my house is not yet decorated for fall just yet, I thought I’d officially share what last year’s home looked like!
Since then I’ve moved, and since then I’ve painted the interior of my current house (decorating against gross grey walls just wasn’t gonna do it for me). I’ll try to share what I do this year in the next couple weeks— my move also gifted me the b-e-a-u-t-y of a large back shed where all my excesses of seasonal decor are organized in storage bins, by holiday, on rack shelving. And I think I just aged 10 years admitting that. 😂
I’ll start with the vision board I designed for what I wanted the end product to look like. I make one of these for almost every project I create, and I do mean every project: happy hours, client parties, home decor, dinner tables, you name it. I like to hone in on the look right from the start, and see how pieces are going to play together:
Honestly, I can say there were very few adjustments made to this look:
- My Amanda Lindroth wicker pagodas found a better home on my mantle versus on my credenza like I had thought, and
- I never got around to painting blue & white chinoiserie pumpkins of my own. You win some, you lose soom.
Without further adieu, enjoy the dusty blue hues of my 2020 fall home decor!
Town & Country magazine had velvet pumpkins on their radar years ahead in this article from 2017— they don’t include my specific source listed (see below!) but do include other shopping sources. I’m not a huge orange-and-black Halloween girl, but did want to nod to the holiday. Hence our color palette.
Sources linked for everything below, in case this is your fall preferred palette as well!
- Black satin ribbon
- Black & white check ribbon
- Wicker pagodas
- Pumpkins were a mix of…
- Real white minis from the grocery
- Ceramic with gold accents from Target (old)
- Mackenzie Childs black & white sets – these and these
- Velvet mix from Plush Pumpkin, but you can also find them here and here
- 3D black paper butterflies
- I twisted up three garlands from Michael’s to create the black branch + ghost look … 2 of this one and 1 of this one.
- I made the Trick Or Treat paper banner years ago, and it has held up! Sorry, that’s an original 🙂
- I sprinkled in spiders similar to these in on the mantle, love the wirey make so I can attach them to other pieces
- And in case you don’t have one, here’s the felt letterboard I use!

I already have a Halloween tablescape in the works — I like to let it build on itself for a couple weeks while I find layers I want to add — so check back in October for a look at how my home comes together this year!
